NOUVELLE CHEMISE

A NEW SHIRT

You have just bought a new shirt, but as is often the case the sleeves are too long. You decide to go to an alterations tailor to shorten them, but watch out! You should take these steps BEFORE you go:

FIXING THE COLORS

You should know that there are two ways of coloring cloth:

1) “Piece-dyed” cloths. These are usually low-end cloths which are often white, off-white or natural colored and which are dyed whole. It’s like a printing press. A piece of cloth that is white or natural-colored to begin with is passed through rollers, which can also print patterns on the cloth.

2) “Yarn-dyed” cloths. The difference here is that the yarns themselves are dyed prior to weaving. They are thus more colorfast in washing (of which more later).

COMMENT FIXER

HOW TO FIX COLORS

Nowadays there are many chemicals which can be used to “fix” or stabilize the colors of your shirt. I greatly prefer natural products.

Take a basin of hot water and add a cup of coarse (i.e. large-grain) salt. Stir it until the salt is dissolved. (You can also use white vinegar but I’ve never tried it.)

Immerse your shirt in this solution and leave it there all night. The next day, machine wash without detergent at 60 degrees Celsius (i.e. medium to high heat) if the shirt is all cotton. Then put it in the dryer. You will thus have shrunk the shirt almost completely; you can repeat this process for extra reassurance.

HOW TO ADJUST YOUR SLEEVES

Before anything else it is a good idea to set your two sleeves individually. Once out of the dryer, take your shirt and put it on without ironing it.

Using a measuring tape, measure 8 cm (about 3 1/8 inches) from the tip of your thumb to your wrist and stick a pin in the shirt (or make a very light pencil mark) at that point. Take this measurement with your arms close to your body and your cuffs unbuttoned. Do this for each sleeve separately.

Take off the shirt, place the cuff on a table and measure the difference between the pin and the edge of the cuff, which in the picture above is about 2.5 cm (or one inch). Now you can just note down these differences in length and take the shirt to be altered making sure to tell them the exact amount to take off for each of the right and left sleeves

Take off the shirt, place the cuff on a table and measure the difference between the pin and the edge of the cuff, which in the picture above is about 2.5 cm (or one inch). Now you can just note down these differences in length and take the shirt to be altered making sure to tell them the exact amount to take off for each of the right and left sleeves.

For example, write down, “1.5 inches left/1 inch right). You can touch up the bottom of the sleeve with the iron to make it easier for the alterations tailor to unstitch it. I will explain in a later post why not to iron the rest of the shirt.

THEY CUT CORNERS… PART 2

In the first part of this post I explained how they manage to make and sell you those flashy internet custom shirts.

To round this out, because I just can’t quit, I’ll supply a few more details.

There were a few shocking things that I can’t believe I left out of the first part.

The first is the absence of any human contact, and thus of dialogue and documentation of the dialogue, when you order a shirt online. In fact, you’re talking to a machine which can only regurgitate back at you the data you gave it. You cannot ask it any other questions. The machine will ask you to measure yourself and, if you’re lucky, will tell you how – sometimes not very well.

Then, some sites ask you your body type. But who can say to himself, “I’m short, fat, with a paunch and a big behind, no neck and sloped shoulders”? Not too many of us, in my opinion, because no one really sees himself as he really is – you need an impartial eye for that!!!

When I was in business, wives or girlfriends who wanted to give a surprise to their husbands or boyfriends would want to order him a custom shirt. In order to do a decent job, I’d ask them to describe how the person in question was built.

“Oh, he is taller than you, a bit more strongly built, with a 42” chest. Very strong and athletic.”

I’d think to myself that he must be some sort of body double for Stallone or Schwarzenegger. A while later, the man in question would show up for “a couple of alterations” and I would see in front of me the twin of George Costanza…

So I ask, how can these Internet experts make you a custom shirt without seeing you? They must be a lot better at shirtmaking than I ever was.

As I wrote earlier, what you get is a particular sleeve length, shoulder width and collar sewn on to a READY TO WEAR SHIRT BODY right on the assembly line. Back in the day we called that a stock special (mesure industrielle), and that’s all it should be called!

As a little something extra, on certain sites these self-styled master shirtmakers proudly proclaim that their shirt collars are not made with fusing. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!!! Let me say now that there are excellent fusible interlinings available today which are much better than some of the lower-end interlinings which have not been preshrunk and which these rascals will put in your collars and cuffs. A bad quality interlining will be very difficult to iron since the interlining and the cloth of the collars and cuffs will shrink at different rates after each wash, which will lead to an excess of fabric in one or the other which may pucker with ironing.

Personally, I prefer a good quality fused collar, which is much easier to iron and which holds its shape admirably. Additionally, very few people know how to iron and fold a shirt correctly (which will be the subject of the next article), so why make their task even more difficult than it is already? It’s your choice: either to wear a shirt with a smooth collar and cuffs or which have folds on them that you can’t quite iron into shape.

DON’T FALL INTO THE TRAP OF CHOOSING SOMETHING JUST BECAUSE THEY SAY IT’S TRADITIONAL – YOU’LL REGRET IT.

I don’t think I’ve said my all on the subject, but I will continue to think about how best to dissuade you from using these hucksters who are killing the profession with their lies.

I will say it again: seek out a real professional, someone who will give you his or her time, who will guide and advise you, who know what they are talking about and who have long experience. Be kind to them, don’t pressure them. If they are occasionally late with an order, as happens sometimes, they must have a lot of work – take it as a sign that you made a good choice. An artisan who does not have much work (unless he’s in a lean period) is not a good sign. Like any other work of artisanry, a shirt needs time and thought to make. A good artisan can’t make you a shirt in two weeks – the shirtmakers who are doing that are selling a standard factory-made article at an exorbitant price. A real shirtmaker creates one-of-a-kind products with his or her own hands. Please keep this in mind.

IN PRAISE OF REAL SHIRTMAKERS
… without whom cutters would not exist. Let us remember those who work unknown and in the back rooms, but who are the heart and lungs of the craft. Thanks to the men and women I’ve worked with so many years and who passed their skills on to me. From the first and second cutters and the preparers who cut out the trimmings, to the finishers, the seamstresses who stitch the buttonholes, the assemblers, the pressers and the woman who carries out the last quality check before delivery, let us thank and remember them.

Praise and thanks to all those who do their part each day to uphold the greatness and reputation of their employer.

Fie on those who look down their diplomas at these folk and scorn them. Fie on the bureaucrats, pencil-pushers, bean counters and managers of all sorts who don’t even realize that they are supporting you, and not the opposite.

I had to say it, and it is done.

MONOGRAMS
This is just a photocopy, unfortunately, of an old book which belonged to my father. According to what I’ve heard, embroidered monograms on shirts go back to the beginning of the last century, or even farther. At that time, men wore nothing but white shirts with detachable collars and cuffs (see below) and had their shirts laundered (the French term, blanchir, literally means “to whiten”, and is still used to refer to the act of laundering linens today).

This made for a lot of white shirt bodies with identical collar bands (to which the detachable collar was fastened) and cuff bands (to which detachable cuffs were attached) at the launderers’. It was hard to tell them apart!

Monogramming came about in order to make sure your washerwoman knew whose shirt was whose. At that time, monograms were either black or navy blue. They were never visible when the shirt was worn because men wore waistcoats and it was extremely bad taste to walk around bare-shirted.

Well-off commoners had their initials embroidered on while aristocrats – according to their degree of nobility – had a crown embroidered with their initials underneath. A prince’s crown was different from a count’s or duke’s crown. If my memory serves me correctly, the number of little balls on top of the crown determined one’s degree of nobility (see the image above with the two crowns in the middle of the last row – the one on the left is a king’s, I believe, while the one on the right is a churchman’s – a bishop or a cardinal, though, probably not a country priest).

Today, shirts come in all colors, and so do their monograms. A discreet monogram is what we call “tone on tone collé” – the monogram is embroidered in the main color of the shirt. A darker tone on tone monogram is a bit more noticeable – picture a navy blue monogram on a sky blue shirt, for example.

A few years ago, monograms were still the sign of a bespoke shirt. Today, anyone can have a monogram put on a shirt. Why not? You can even have them stitched on by machine – want to know how to tell the difference from hand monogramming? A machine-stitched monogram is thicker and thus stiffer. A hand-embroidered monogram is much finer and more flexible, but the big difference is that a machine-stitched monogram is as clean on the back as it is on the front, but a hand monogram is not! If you own a hand-monogrammed shirt, look at the inside of the shirt. You may be surprised.

If you are interested in seeing hand-embroidered monogramming, visit the atelier of Madame Azemar at 23 rue Pasquier, in the Eighth Arrondissement of Paris. You can even bring her some shirts to monogram.

On detachable collars and cuffs:
At the time these were common, they were starched either to a glazed (shiny) finish or a simple (dull) finish, and were stiff as a board and as uncomfortable as possible. In addition, they shrank with each laundering and became quite sharp with use. You can imagine the torture of wearing a detachable collar all day. In order to give them their rounded shape they were rolled between two steel cylinders while still soaked in starch.

http://bespokeetc.blogspot.com
