Les ACADEMICIENS / MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMIE FRANCAISE

While straightening up (a New Year’s resolution), I found a few pictures of members of the prestigious Académie Française in their regalia. You will no doubt understand that I’ve concealed the faces for the sake of their privacy.

Of all of the outfits I have seen in my career, without a doubt this is the one that impressed me the most. It’s the most magical, the most sumptuous, and the one that requires the most hand work from all the craftspeople involved. True, not everyone gets to see a member of the Académie in his or her finery, but to take part in the fittings and the production of this outfit is quite simply fantastic. Bear in mind that these outfits take almost six months to make! It’s not that it’s more difficult to make than another outfit – for the tailor it’s made in the same way as a morning coat or tailcoat. But the hard part is that each piece of the coat and the trousers must be handed over to the embroiderer. I don’t know if you can even imagine the colossal task this represents since all this embroidery is done BY HAND with gold and green thread.

First the tailor must carry out a muslin fitting, that is a fitting made with thick muslin on which the pattern will be based. Following that he will trace out all the pieces necessary to give them to the embroiderer and that is where things can take quite long.

This is an extremely painstaking process because we have to constantly take into account all the embroidery work that will be done when we are preparing all the garments. Every calculation must reflect the time and the space taken up by the embroiderer and the embroidery in order for the finished garment to be perfect. For example, there is no way to make a last-minute change to the side of a pair of trousers. Once the embroidery has been done everything else must be carried out with extreme precision.

JE SUIS ACADÉMICIEN. / I JOIN THE ACADEMIE FRANCAISE

That’s me in 1989 trying on the uniform worn by members of the Académie Française. Yep, just me, since the tailor had so many problems getting the fit just right, I luckily had the same build as the customer and thus had the opportunity to try on the regalia!

That’s one of the advantages of working in a big establishment – there are lots of people around with many different physiques. From time to time we’d ask each other to try on a garment, because the customer isn’t always around at a crucial moment. Thus we’d get to talking and in order to explain how someone was built we’d say, “Well, he’s built like So-and-so…” Actually, to be frank, the way we usually put it was, “Sheesh! I got one who’s built like a truck after three accidents, he looks like So-and-so.” Not too sophisticated, but that’s how we talked in the back rooms.

This particular member of the Académie was indeed “built like a truck” but he was 70 and I was 32 at the time. The tailor thus had his problems but for us shirtmakers we just had to make a formal white-tie shirt – wing collar, link cuffs, holes for studs down the placket, and a bib front in Marcella piqué cotton. We only had two very important points to check, and that’s why the coat and shirt fittings had to be at the same time:

1) The opening of the waistcoat. In effect the bib of the shirt must extend below the opening of the waistcoat and an inch or so above the top of the sash. If for some reason the tailor lowers or raises (the latter is less serious) that opening, we have to make the corresponding changes to the length of the bib. I note that the waistcoat is in white Marcella piqué like the bib and the bow tie.

2) The top of the trousers. This has the same problem as with the waistcoat: we need to make sure that positions of the features of the shirt and the trousers correspond.

That is why the shirt is finalized only at the last minute when the uniform is being finished.

When everything is finished, it looks like this

A photo from 1992. The photographer asked us to stand naturally, which as you can see we did.

Protocol requires that the induction of a member of the Académie Française take place in two steps: the presentation of the sword and the admission ceremony.

LA REMISE DE L'ÉPÉE /

THE PRESENTATION OF THE SWORD

Quel magnifique souvenir.

In general this takes place in Paris a few days before the admission ceremony. Friends, family members or the wife of the inductee usually present the sword. The uniform of the new inductee is a gift from the other members of the Académie, but at €30,000 or €40,000, they probably make it a group gift. The sword is a very beautiful object designed and constructed especially for the inductee. Normally the handle is designed to reflect either a character trait of the inductee or one of the inductee’s works of art or literature or other achievements.

Two handles have left lasting impressions on me. The first was completely in crystal, magnificently shimmering in its presentation box. We never touched it out of fear of making it fall and break.

The second was a true work of art. Its pommel was formed by a globe of the planet Earth. As the inductee was a renowned diplomat, each region where he had been posted was represented by a small precious stone on the globe.

I once had the luck to attend this ceremony in a room at the Palais Garnier. The locale itself was a place of wonder. We were an “intimate” group of about 100, in a paradise of champagne, petit-fours and Fauchon catering. The honoree himself spent several moments with us to thank us for all our work. Such courtesy is rare these days. What a wonderful memory.

LA CÉRÉMONIE D'INTRONISATION A LA COUPOLE

THE ADMISSION CEREMONY

According to protocol, the inductee is supposed to be assisted with his uniform on the day of this ceremony, so on the morning of the big day the tailor and shirtmaker come to his home.

What takes place resembles this:

Et au final ceci
And finally this:

Et la photo de famille
And a final “family photo”:

Merci

The photos are from 1997.

In conclusion:

I had the privilege of attending the admission ceremony. As an anecdote, our inductee had put on his uniform, we were quite ahead of schedule and he offered to “buy us a drink.” It’s nice to have an aperitif with a member of the Académie in full regalia – we should have taken pictures. Moreover, it was an excellent whisky. When it was time to go we were getting ready to leave and he said to us, “Come with me, I’m scared stiff.” His words, not mine. A bit surprised, we followed him. Since there were some journalists outside his front door we snuck out another way. We were met by a chauffeur and a big limousine. I’ll never forget the faces of other drivers and the passersby: he sat in front, in his regalia, and we were in back., crossing all of Paris. At our destination, he grabbed an attendant and asked him to find us seats inside. It’s quite a feeling to walk the red carpet surrounded by members of the Republican Guard saluting us with their sabres. The inside was gigantic. The dome was 100 feet high and everything echoes. A ring of aged gentlemen familiar to us from television rising to their feet to welcome the new inductee. The president making his welcome speech for an hour or two and the inductee thanking him in a speech of about the same length. It was a bit long. A few dozed while others were quite apparently asleep. I admit I almost faltered, but luckily my colleague was a bit under the weather and his frequent coughs kept me awake.

In any case, a marvelous memory.

PS: These are my first efforts with PhotoFiltre, so please be gentle.

NOSTALGIE ..... NOSTALGIA…

As this year begins, and before moving on to other things, I wanted to share with you some photos from 1951 from the magazine Adam, a famous tailoring journal. I like the style of that period very much. Not too many comments to make, these pictures speak for themselves.

Quelles belles images !!

What beautiful pictures, don’t you think? The models are gorgeous. Back then women looked like women, not shapeless anorexics!

It was another time, another century when clothes were important and when people liked to dress themselves. Today, everyone simply follows the fashion a handful of designers let loose in the market.

Young people don’t know how to get dressed without wearing designer-label jeans and sneakers, and as they grow up they take this habit with them as they start wearing suits and ties. Only a few people dare to be their own fashion and break the mold. They get taken for nuts or aliens, yet they’re the ones who are right.

I take the opportunity here to salute all those who still know how to be themselves, those who don’t follow fashion’s Pied Piper…

BONNE ANNEE / HAPPY NEW YEAR

To tell the truth I’ve thought long and hard for some original way to wish you a happy new year. Nothing came to mind. I don’t know how to make a clip and animated gifs are too sophisticated for me! So I decided that it would be simplest to wish you a happy new year using my “symbol”, the symbol of all my craft. Thus, I wish all of you – despite the current state of affairs –

A WONDERFUL 2009

On this first day of the year, without wishing to “buy a conscience” or to dwell on the negative, I urge us not to forget those for whom fine shoes, fine suits, shirts and ties shall always be out of reach. Those to whom the world of bespoke truly is in a different world, those who work and who create a world of luxury without ever being able to afford it themselves…

Those of you who have contacted me privately and to whom my words have given a few moments of pleasure, please remember that this blog is also for you. If there are particular topics you would like me to discuss, please let me know.
