BRAND NAME SEDUCTION
Now we’re playing in the big leagues, with some fancy designer or prestigious brand names. These aren’t €100 or €200 shirts but luxury products that sell for €500 or €600, even more sometimes. How do they do it?

It’s simple. Because certain brands are household names or famously prestigious, enough people believe that they must be the best in quality. And one day some bright soul at the brand realizes it would be even more prestigious to offer a custom service. A bit of market research to show that customers will go for it, and they decide to choose the most profitable “custom” product they can. Shirts are ideal, because it’s not too expensive to set up a “custom” atelier (a few pieces of cloth, a few examples of different collars to give some atmosphere) – now all they need is to find someone to run it. Sometimes they draft one of their ace sellers of ready-to-wear or stock special clothes, or they bring one in from somewhere else. Then all they need is a subcontractor, and Famous Brand X has now become a custom shirtmaker!

Of course, you can’t sell a €500 shirt like a €15 shirt. Customers can be much more demanding and a lot less likely to accept any compromise in the quality or fit of their shirt, even if it comes in a nice box with tissue and ribbons. And there, well, the salesman hired to run the atelier doesn’t know how to alter the shirt, and has to explain to the subcontractor what needs to be done as best he can gather. But because the salesman has no technical training in shirtmaking, there’s a high risk that the subcontractor won’t get the right information about what needs to be altered. Since each trade has its own “language”, so to speak, with different terms for each feature and step in the process, it can be difficult to understand one another. I’ve known of very large brands which learned too late that you can’t pick up shirtmaking as you go along, and that even if it seems easy, it’s a trade requiring skill and training.

There are still some houses that manage to get by like this, but quite a few who have tried have lost customers due to this lack of know-how. I still wonder what the salesman would say if, as sometimes happens, the customer asked to see his pattern or to visit the workrooms where his shirts are made.

A piece of advice: Visit a trained shirtmaker, someone who’s set out on his own and doesn’t have any pretensions to be anything else. You’ll see his cutting table, his scissors, his pencils and the other tools we use. That’s the real deal. A real shirtmaker will be able to tell you exactly what he’ll do for you, he’ll be able to answer all your questions and will in fact welcome them, because we shirtmakers love to talk shop and in fact have a hard time shutting up about it. And your shirt will be quite a bit cheaper than it would in certain luxury shops, but it’ll be a good shirt expertly made by trained hands to your measurements.
